Not to be confused with the busier Frankfurt International Airport, Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HHN) is also an international airport and is located in central western Germany. The airport itself is situated to the far west of Frankfurt, approximately 130 km / 80 miles away, within the Hahn area and next to Bärenbach, Büchenbeuren, Lötzbeuren, Raversbeuren and Sohren.

The 24-hour Frankfurt Hahn Airport is also known for its award-winning cargo facilities and is connected to the city centre by a range of affordable ground transport. Despite being the city's number two airport, Frankfurt Hahn serves almost four million passengers per year aboard budget airlines from 12 countries and numerous destinations. The facility prides itself on being an extremely competitive, low-cost German airport, with Ryanair being amongst its most significant airlines.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport is a long distance from Frankfurt and other major cities, but being close to the E-42 and the B-327 highways, it does have good road access and other transport options for those without a car. A regular public bus service serves Frankfurt and offers the cheapest transfer option, while private shuttles and taxis also run to Frankfurt. Nearby destinations close to Hahn Airport include Cologne, Ludwigshafen and Luxembourg.

Frankfurt Hahn Airport began its life as the Hahn Air Base, which was used extensively by the military and US Air Force during the Cold War years. In 1993, the airport was inaugurated as a civilian airport and during the first 12 months, served around 7,000 passengers. However, today Frankfurt Hahn Airport handles over 10,000 passengers - per day.

The year of 1999 was an important time for the airport, when the budget airline Ryanair began its operations here and helped passenger levels finally exceed one million in 2002. More recently, Frankfurt Hahn Airport (HHN) has installed a new four-lane access road, extended the main runway to 3,800 metres / 12,465 feet, opened a new 'VG' cargo terminal and created additional shopping areas.

There are good money facilities at the single-terminal airport, including a full-service bank, bureau de change and cash machines, while a commendable selection of places to eat and shop are also available. The shopping options include a Travel Value duty-free outlet, Metropolitan Health and Beauty salon, Relay newsagent, and Fairland Airport Shop, selling a range of regional German products.

A large choice of cafés and restaurants provide sustenance for visitors to Frankfurt Hahn Airport, such as the BäckSnäck Jung, Café Gallery and Pizza e Pasta. Especially popular is the Flyer One café, which boasts excellent runway views, where you are able to observe the incoming aircraft.

There is a business conference centre situated near to the terminal, with a dozen, well-equipped conference rooms and business facilities. At Frankfurt Hahn Airport itself, basic business facilities can be found at the Service Centre, while there is also wireless Internet in all public areas of the terminal.
